Plot

Janardan , born and brought up in the very middle class locality of Pitampura in Delhi, has a larger than life dream – of being a rockstar like Jim Morrison! But all he gets from his reluctant audience is ridicule and humiliation. He’s at his wit’s end ,when he realises that all musical stars, all artists in fact, have one thing in common. And that is tragedy. They all have tragic lives. They have all suffered painful heartbreaks to become what they are. Alas, there is no pain in Janardan’s life - it is an oasis of peace. Unless he does something drastic, he will never become a rockstar. Heer Kaul is the undisputed diva of the college campus - beautiful, talented, arrogant, rich, unavailable. She has broken many hearts. . Janardan hopes she will break his heart too. He sets out to woo Heer with the sole object of getting his heart broken. Rock star is the journey of a boy - who leaves behind Janardan to become Jordan; who traverses the highs and lows of life – from simple naivete to tortured soul, from the pleasure of unaffected friendship to the torment of unrequited love, from the campus in Delhi to the international stage… He ultimately gets all that his heart has ever desired…but in the process shatters / loses his heart forever…

Casting

The lead role is played by Ranbir Kapoor, with whom the Eros International worked recently on Anjaana Anjaani. Director Imtiaz Ali, who loved Kareena Kapoor's performance in his Jab We Met wanted to cast her in Rockstar. However, the script in Rockstar required some romantic scenes between the romantic leads. As Ranbir and Kareena happened to be cousins, this would have been a problem. Moreover, the filmmakers could not imagine replacing Ranbir with any other actor as the character that Ranbir Kapoor plays in Rockstar was tailor made for him. They then made a joint decision to let go of their plan to cast Kareena in Rockstar.[3] Eventually American model Nargis Fakhri was cast as the female lead.[4] The film would also mark Shammi Kapoor's last appearance in a feature film who had died on August 14, 2011.[5]

Filming

The lead character Jordan is loosely based on Imtiaz Ali's Jat friend, who lived in a small settlement in Pitam Pura.[6] The shooting began in May 2010 and the film is scheduled to release on 11 November 2011. The major part of the shooting took place at locations in Kashmir at KulgamKupwaraSrinagar and last phase has been shot in Delhi including, Kotla MubarakpurNizamuddin DargahGreater Kailash, Munirka, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Madangir DDA and Connaught Place, and three-day schedule at the Shri Ram College of CommerceSt. Stephen's College, followed by one at the Hindu College, director Imtiaz Ali's alma mater, during the winter break of these colleges.[7] The film was shot in reverse as the crew didn't want to break the continuity of Ranbir's hairstyle. So the climax with long hair was shot first.[6]
Film's costumes were designed by Aki Narula, who dressed lead Ranbeer in "small-town denim-and-sweater combination and later, pathani-style kurtas with arm bands" completing the rockstar look, as the designer said, "I dress the character in what the character can afford." [8] The film's lead actress, Nargis Fakhri, who plays the role of a Kashmiri Pandit girl, will be seen wearing a traditional Kashmiri Pandit wedding outfit. Great attention was given to detail in portraying a typical Kashmiri Pandit bride, with Nargis wearing the traditional Pandit Pheran, Dejhor (ear ornament worn by Kashmiri Pandit brides) and Taranga (head cap worn underneath the veil by Kashmiri Pandit brides).[9] This is the first time in Bollywood that aKashmiri Pandit wedding will be shown.[10]

Soundtrack

The music for the film is scored by A. R. Rahman replacing Imtiaz Ali's previous associate, Pritam. The soundtrack features 14 tracks overall,[11] with all lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil.Mohit Chauhan had lent his voice for nine songs. The audio rights were bought by T-Series.[12] According to Rahman, Rockstar is "a character driven film and as one can guess from the title, there will be lots of guitar".[13] Rockstar is a musical journey that sails through classical rock, ballads, Gujarati folk, the Sufi music and even a gypsy note from an unheard Czech tradition.[14]

[edit]Critical Reception

Loot opened to mostly negative reviews from critics. Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama rated the film 1.5/5 and said "Loot is an 80s style masala fare that lacks smart writing and slick direction. At best, it may find some patronage from spectators who relish typical masala fares." Oneindia.in gave the film 2 stars out of 5, claiming that "Loot is disappointing." MovieTalkies said that "All in all, Loot remains an extremely avoidable fare." Movieskope, who also gave the film 1/5, said "This one is better avoided." Finally, top critic Komal Nahta from KoiMoi.com, gave the film 0.5/5 and added "Loot is a poor fare and will fare poorly at the box-office."

[edit]Box office

The film opened to a poor response at the box office on its opening weekend, though after the first day, it picked up much better. Loot performed slightly better at some single screens [15% to 20%], and on the whole, collected 13 crores. It was elevated to average status by Box office India.
